Maldives mulls German as optional language

Government is considering to add German as the growing repertoire of international language options taught at Maldivian schools, education minister Dr Aishath Shiham said Wednesday.

Chinese and Arabic are among some of the languages currently taught at Maldivian schools.

During a meeting with the newly appointed Maldives Ambassador to Germany, Jameela Ali Khalid, the Minister noted that teaching German could open many potential options for Maldivian students aiming to pursue careers in hospitality and tourism.

She explained that expert German teachers would be brought to Maldives to ensure highest success rates.

The two discussed ways in which the Maldivian education system may be further improved, and about securing German aid in developing the system. The Minister stated that Germany was a country well developed in regards to industry, and that Germany boasts one of the best vocational training programs in the world.

In that regard, the minister noted that German support would be highly beneficial for the effort, adding that securing higher education scholarships for Maldivian students was also an important priority.

Speaking during the meeting, Jameela stated that Maldives has received German aid in numerous fields, excluding education, during the strong Maldivian-German relations established 50 years ago.
