Maldives FA plans women's league

The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has launched efforts to introduce a women's football league in the Maldives.

New FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel said three tournaments were in the works for this year, and that a futsal tournament was among this initiative as well.

He explained that a league including eight teams was currently being contemplated, and that teams from Addu City, Fuvahmulak, Laamu Atoll and Thaa Atoll have expressed in interest in participating in the league.

"We plan to introduce the league with 4 teams from Male', and 4 teams from the Atolls. The league can only become a reality if the sufficient amount of teams take part," Bassam said.

Bassam further stated that if a league could not be held, then a knock out tournament would be held instead.

All steps towards a new league has to be taken in consideration with the difficulty of sharing the national stadium being used by the Dhivehi Premier League.
