Over 200 cops seek cooperative society loan after pay delay

Around 200 police officers have applied for loans from the Police Cooperative Society (POLCO) over the delay in receiving February's salary.

The CEO of POLCO Abdul Mannan Yoosuf said had provided loan aids to officers in the past but had relaxed its loan policy after considering the salary delay this month. POLCO was in the process of issuing loans to around 200 police officers, Yoosuf said.

"POLCO worked to secure loans for officers in the past as well. However, now we've temporarily relaxed our loan policy over the salary delay. We are now in the process of issuing the loans to the applicants," the CEO said.

POLCO is set to offer a maximum MVR10,000 interest free loan for each applicant without a specified repayment period.

Government meanwhile had said the delay in paying salaries for state employees was down to a change to an automated system.

Finance ministry had said except the Maldives Police Service, the salary for all state employees had been deposited on Wednesday.
