700 from Maldives south sign for ruling party

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Wednesday received the signed membership forms of 700 people from the southernmost Atoll Addu City.

The forms of the new members were handed to president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during a small ceremony in the capital Male on Wednesday afternoon.

Tourism minister and deputy PPM leader Moosa Zameer hailed the efforts of the party's drive to secure super majority in the upcoming local council elections, announcing that more people from the south would be signing for the ruling party in the coming weeks.

PPM had recently intensified efforts to boost membership with a target of reaching 100,000 before the next presidential elections in 2018
