Maldives awards King Salman mosque project to Turkish firm

The construction of the King Salman Mosque, which will become the largest mosque to be built in in the Maldives, has been contracted to Turkish company, Turmaks Alke, the same company in charge of constructing the Hulhumale Treetop Hospital.

The company was awarded the project after presenting the best proposal after the government put up the project for bid.

After signing the agreement, Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that the construction of the King Salman Mosque would be completed within 500 days starting from February 28, giving August of 2018 as the deadline for the completion of the project.

The contract worth USD24.95 million would be funded under the free aid of the Saudi government.

"This mosque will be the largest to have ever been built on the Maldives. This will not only be a mosque, but will include various facilities which will allow for it to be used as an Islamic center. There will be space for over 6000 people inside the mosque, and the mosque area will be able to accommodate over 10,000 people on Fridays and for the Eid prayers," minister said.

The Minister further revealed that an auditorium as well as a multi purpose hall would be constructed within the mosque, along with a new building for the Quran Center. A world class library, classrooms and seminar rooms will also be built within the mosque.

There will be six storeys in the 41500 square feet mosque being built as a gift from King Salman. Four elevators will be included in the building, and a 44100 square feet area will be dedicated as parking space.

Muizzu said the mosque would be built on the land north of the Artificial beach, and that work was being carried out to empty the area of vehicles. The site will be fenced and closed down shortly.

The area is also set to be developed along with the construction of the mosque, with lots of changes planned for the east coast of Male.
