Over 1400 new members join ruling party in one day

Over 1,400 new members have signed for the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in one day. The ruling party said most of the new members were young people from the Atolls.

At a ceremony held in the State Electric Company building, the newly signed forms were presented to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

A total of 655 forms were handed over to the president on Wednesday from various islands across the nation.

A ceremony held at the office of the First Lady, another 800 forms were submitted to PPM. Economic minister Mohamed Saeed said that the 800 forms were signed by the nations youth, who had not been part of any political party previously.

Saeed noted that the signing of so many new members on a single day shows the growing support for PPM in the Maldives.

PPM is the largest political party in the Maldives according to statistics released by the Election Commission in 2016, with 37,633 members. With a large number of new recruits to the party so far this year, the party numbers are expected to rise even more this year.
