Over 2,000 new members sign for ruling party

Through first lady Fathmath Ibrahim’s recent effort to increase the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) membership, over 2,000 new members have joined the party – profusely increasing the party’s membership.

A ceremony was held at Dharubaaruge on Tuesday night to formally accept all the membership forms that were submitted from different parts of Maldives. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom also took part in this ceremony.

According to the statistics provided by the ruling party, 462 new people joined PPM from Hulhumale. Seventeen members from former ruling coalition partner Jumhoory Party (JP) defected to PPM, while 361 members of different political parties have also decided to align with PPM, the party revealed.

Further, 96 new entrepreneurs and 80 health-workers have also joined PPM through the first lady’s efforts. The party also revealed that a number of people from Alif Alif atoll Ukulhas, which has a huge opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) support-base also joined PPM recently.

PPM now boasts a membership of over 60,000.
