Gayoom loyalist fined MVR 85K for contempt of court

Abdul Aleem, the secretary general of Progressive Party of Maldives's (PPM) Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom faction was fined MVR85,0000 for contempt of court on Thursday by the civil court.

Aleem had acted against direct orders of the court, and carried out his work as the party's secretary general even after the court handed reins of PPM to current President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

PPM had filed this matter in court, and the court found him in breach of their previous ruling, and slapped him with the tremendous fine.

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who founded PPM, lost a bitter power struggle for the party’s control with president Yameen after the civil court handed over party control to the younger Gayoom.

The rift between the two brothers has split the ruling party in two, which ultimately ended with the elder Gayoom publicly withdrawing his support for his brother.

Both Maumoon, and his lawmaker son, along with two other lawmakers who are loyal to the elder Gayoom have already been sacked from the party.

Gayoom has since signed a historic treaty with the leaders of opposition Jumhoory Party (JP), Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) religious conservative Adhaalath Party and a new opposition coalition was formally announced in March.
