Transport authority in row with ferry operators over fare hike

Transport authority on Monday claimed that the Airport Ferry Operator Association does not have the jurisdiction to increase the ferry fare between the capital Male and the airport.

The Airport Ferry Operator Association had recently increased the ferry fare from MVR10 per trip to MVR11.

The association announced that it will begin implementing the new fare from May 10.

However, the transport authority later claimed that the association had not consulted them, nor did they discuss the matter with the authority before they decided to implement the new fare.

“The airport ferry operators do not have the authority to bring changes like this. We’re looking in to their statement, and appropriate action will be taken,” a spokesperson from the transport authority claimed.

Currently the ferry fare is at MVR10 per trip.

Since the airport is located on the island Hulhule – about a five minute ferry ride away from capital Male – the ferry service runs throughout the day. In addition to travellers, the ferry operators see regular commuters every day as a large potion of the population is employed at ‘airport jobs’.
