Maldives to host hot air balloon festival on Eid

Maldives' first hot air balloon festival, hosted by Youth Ministry in association with Unix Sporting has been rescheduled for the date of Eid. The festival was initially planned to be hosted on May 19.

Speaking to Avas, Unix Sporting’s managing director Reshan Shareef stated that the event had to be delayed until the weather was most ideal.

“We are speaking with the meteorological department on a daily basis to check on daily weather reports. We have delayed the event to the date of the most ideal forecast, which coincidentally falls on the same date as Eid. We are hoping for a great time this Eid” said Reshan.

She also noted that opportunity had opened up for more participants due to the delay. The number of tickets being sold has now increased, allowing 2000 people to participate in the hot air balloon festival.

Reshan revealed that their “like and share” promotion on social media will distribute a free ticket to the festival.

Tickets for the balloon ride will be sold, starting May 7, at MVR700 with each balloon accommodating 30 passengers.

The balloons used for the festival, along with a group of experts in flying the balloon, will be flying in from abroad for the festival.

Other stalls will also be held at the area of the festival. Three balloons will take flight during the event.

The balloons will be held in place and will be lit up during the night.

Hot air balloons are flown in nations around the globe and remains a popular attraction for tourists.
