Boat captain arrested after accident

Police on Wednesday arrested the captain of the boat which had been cause of a speedboat collision that had left over a dozen people injured with two critical.

The speedboat en-route to Male from Summer Island Resort had collided with an anchored boat near Reethi Rah Resort. The anchored vessel reportedly had no navigation lights on at the time which had caused the accident.

The four expat crew members believed to be undocumented workers, face deportation.

Police said the captain and the crew had fled when the speedboat collided with their boat which had prompted the arrest.

Criminal Court had later extended the remand of the captain by 15 days.

Privately run ADK hospital had said earlier that two of the passengers on-board the speedboat remain in critical condition and are on ventilator.

Details of the passengers have not been disclosed but foreigners were reportedly among the injured.

The two critical passengers had suffered severe internal injuries and head trauma. Both had undergone emergency surgery late Tuesday.
