Nasheed leads opposition delegation to Germany

The leaders of Maldives’ opposition have met with Germany’s parliamentarians and top officials of government institutions, regarding the political situation in the Maldives.

The opposition panel that met with the German leaders include; Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed, former speaker of the parliament and current North-Henveiru MP Abdullah Shahid , MDP special council member Aminath Nadira, Jumhoory Party’s (JP) deputy leaders Ameen Ibrahim and Dr Asim Ahmed, as well as Adam Azim, who is jailed former defence minister Mohamed Nazim’s brother.

The panel will be in Germany till Saturday, and is scheduled to meet with various stakeholders of their government.

MDP noted that they will also be meeting with foreign-relations officers and the economic experts at the Chancellor’s Office of Germany.

Further, they will also be meeting with leaders of different political parties in Germany.

Earlier in May, self-exiled former president Nasheed demanded president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to immediately release all jailed opposition leaders, or face intensified opposition efforts of impeachment.

“After that I hope [president Yameen] allows a free and fair elections in 2018. If he doesn’t, we will initiate efforts to remove him from office,” Nasheed had warned.

Nasheed was jailed on terror charges after he was convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison over the arbitrary detention of a sitting judge while he was president.

He now lives in self imposed exile in the UK after he was allowed to leave to Britain on medical leave in an internationally brokered deal in January last year.
