Monsoon brings thunderstorms, more marine accidents

Due to the heavy storm on Thursday morning in Kaafu Atoll, two accidents occurred at sea, coastguard has revealed.

The meteorological centre issued a white alert, and average wind gusts reached a record peak with 55 mph on Thursday morning.

Coastguard spokesperson said that a supply boat with three crew members, en route to Ranveli Island Resort in Alif Alif Atoll had started taking in water near Fihalhohi Island Resort, in south Kaafu Atoll. The coastguard is currently at the area aiding the boat, the official added.

The second accident occurred near Guraidhoo, also in Kaafu Atoll when a boat en route to Keyodhoo in Vaavu Atoll began taking in water and sinking. The coastguard is currently active at that area as well, according to the official.

Maldives is currently experiencing thunderstorms and rough seas as it is the south-west monsoon. As a result, it is also creating havoc in many parts of the country. On Wednesday night, a peculiarly strong thunderstorm hit Thinadhoo in the southern Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, blowing off the roofs of six houses and uprooting several trees in the island.

MNDF has warned everyone travelling by sea to exercise caution as accidents at sea are also increasing as of lately.
