Maldives coveys condolences to Sri Lanka flood victims

Foreign minister Dr Mohamed Asim on Friday morning, called on the Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena, and conveyed condolences to the Sri Lankan government and its people for the devastating affects of the flood.

Sri Lanka is also experiencing heavy torrential rains that is causing floods in the southern part of the country. The disaster management centre of Sri Lanka claimed that deaths caused by the flood have already risen to 203, with 94 individuals still missing.

During the call, Dr Asim expressed deep sympathises on behalf of the Maldivian government to the people of Sri Lanka, especially those directly affected by the flooding and landslides.

Dr Asim had also commended the Sri Lankan president on the quick action in assisting the people affected by the disaster, and expressed hope in the success of every relief and recovery effort.

President Sirisena had thanked Maldives for its solidarity, and conveyed sincere appreciation for the financial assistance provided by the Maldivian government for relief efforts.

The foreign minister had met with his Sri Lankan counterpart Ravi Karunanayake in late may to hand over financial assistance from the Maldivian government to aid Sri Lanka in the crisis they are currently facing.
