Another govt lawmaker quits ruling party

The government's woes continues deepen after another ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) quit the party on Tuesday.

PPM secretary general confirmed that Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed had in a letter expressed his wish to leave the party.

Latheef in the letter said he had joined PPM to ensure the progress and prosperity of the nation and its people. However, the embarrassing loss in the local council elections proved that the ruling party had lost the support of the people, the letter read.

"So since I might not be able follow the parliament whip-lines of the party, its best that I leave," Latheef said.

Latheef had been elected to the parliament as an independent candidate but had later signed for the ruling party.

Latheef's decision comes a day after he along with nine government lawmakers signed an opposition led censure motion to unseat the parliament speaker.

After the now opposition coalition in March had filed a second motion to unseat speaker Abdulla Maseeh, the government had engineered an amendment to the parliament rules of procedure raising the number of lawmaker signatures required to file a censure motion against the speaker and his deputy from 15 to 42.

The opposition had filed the third censure motion against Maseeh with 45 lawmakers which included nine lawmakers from the ruling party.
