Ruling party unfazed by three lawmakers' exit

The ruling coalition parliamentary group would now be more united with the exit of three lawmakers, a top government lawmaker said Sunday.

Dhihdhoo lawmaker Abdul Latheef Mohamed and Hanimaadhoo lawmaker Hussain Shahudhee left the ruling party last week who were followed by Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed on Sunday.

The lawmakers left the party in the wake an opposition led censure motion against the parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh which were backed by seven other government lawmakers.

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has since been struggling to regain the government control over the parliament with reports indicating that more lawmakers could crossover to the opposition.

However, Nilandhoo MP Abdulla Khaleel insisted that the party was not concerned by the exit of the three lawmakers saying that the ruling parliamentary group are now more united than ever.

After the now opposition coalition in March had filed a second motion to unseat speaker Abdulla Maseeh, the government had engineered an amendment to the parliament rules of procedure raising the number of lawmaker signatures required to file a censure motion against the speaker and his deputy from 15 to 42.

The opposition had filed the third censure motion against Maseeh with 45 lawmakers which included ten lawmakers from the ruling party.
