MVR 1.9 mil in ticket refunds not claimed to parliament

A 2015 audit report of the People's Majlis - local parliament house - shows the expenses on cancelled fare tickets of transportation of 2014 which had not been refunded amounts to MVR 1.9 million.

The report which was released on Monday (August 14) detailed the tickets purchased for transportation under parliament oversight summed up to the mentioned amount as of February 2016 - adding that substantial work in reclaiming refunds over cancelled fares was not executed from the administration of Majlis.

"Under the Financial Act, government can take necessary action against the responsible entity if they do not receive money on any expenses reversed - however the administration board of parliament has not acted responsibly in reclaiming refunds" the report read.

Apart from the issue of unclaimed ticket fare funds, the case of spending a total of MVR 13.5 million was spent as remuneration of 24 security officials hired for the surveillance of parliament premises - with a significant amount spend on salaries while these officials were not precisely put on designated tasks. The period of expense ran from 2014 til 2017.

The report stated the security personnel held designations officially until 2015 however termination notice - which has to be provided two months prior to employment termination - was handed to these officials on November 2016. Adding that a further 5 million rufiyaa was incurred during this period.

However the expenditure did not breach any laws and regulations of the Financial Act and every expense was incurred according to parliament budget of 2015, as per the audit report.
