Gayoom's daughter concerned over brother's jailing, but won't resign

Deposed ruling party leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's daughter Dhunya Maumoon on Sunday said she was "concerned" by her lawmaker brother's jailing, but insisted that she would not step down from her state minister's post.

After attending her brother, Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon's hearing on Sunday, Dhunya told Avas that her loyalty to uncle and incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had not changed.

"I am still the State Minister and that has not changed, neither have I resigned" Dunya confirmed after several opposition supporters claimed that the former foreign minister's loyalty to the government and her uncle had waned over her brother's jailing.

This is the first time, Dunya had attended a court hearing of her brother Faris.

Faris is on trial for alleged case to buy-off and influence lawmakers to back the opposition led move to unseat the parliament speaker. Additionally he has been charged with misuse of Progressive Party of Maldives' logo and flag as well as impersonation.

While siblings Faris and Yumna have actively voiced out their criticism against the current government and incumbent president Yameen, Dunya and Ghassan are filling State Minister designations in the government.
