Majlis approves name of new Governor Naseer

Amid opposition protests and MNDF officials walling up speaker's seat Thursday's Majlis sitting proceeded to approve the name of Ahmed Naseer to succeed as Governor following Azeema Adam's resignation to move to US.

Naseer received approval through a total of 33 votes in Thursday's parliament proceedings.

Thursday's parliament sitting - which breaks usual schedule - will be the last proceeding before People's Majlis goes into recess. Following the sitting, parliamentarians will take a month's leave from work.

The parliament conduct followed suit of Wednesday - on a similar note - with security officials barricading the speaker's seat from any apparent altercation by the opposition who had taken up the usual slurs and chants calling out for the resignation of speaker Abdullah Maseeh.

Both wings of parliamentarians participated in heated exchange much like Wednesday with several lawmakers taunting one another with profanity.

The sitting concluded with Maseeh challenging the opposition and stressing he will not be intimidated by any threats or blackmailing, instead he will continue to work in the best interest of the public and government.
