Speaker unfazed by opposition 'intimidation'

People's Majlis speaker Abdullah Maseeh Mohamed has challenged the opposition and its lawmakers stating he will not be intimidated over any threats of influencing.

Maseeh made the statement to media post Thursday's parliament sitting - where heated verbal tirades were exchanged between pro-government lawmakers and opposition allied counterparts. Much like Wednesday's proceedings several parliamentarians breached formal conduct with some exacting slurs and profanity.

The opposition had filed for a no-confidence motion of the Majlis speaker previously - which was met with adequate hostility from the government lawmakers' faction in parliament, ensuing a continued clash between the two wings of politicians.

Anti-government lawmakers had then filed a petition with signatures from 45 members of parliament - which was pushed to Majlis floor for debate. However, Majlis sittings went into hiatus following the commotion which eventually resulted in the case getting dismissed.

Thursday's unusual sitting comes as the final proceeding prior to recess, and the opposition had warned Majlis will not commence unless speaker's no-confidence motion is once again put forth to the floor for deliberation.
