Opposition urge protests against by-election

Vice President Mohamed Shifaz of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) urged everyone to protest against Election Commission's scheduled by-elections at the six constituencies which four disqualified lawmakers' constituents.

Shifaz has insisted the citizens to frequent rallies and protests against the by-election.

While speaking at Kunooz - a prime hub for opposition rallies - Shifaz stated that Supreme Court's verdict clearly indicates none of the lawmakers who were in question had lost their seats at parliament. He criticized the Elections Commission, questioning the integrity of the body and slamming their decision to hold by-election.

MDP's vice president condemned the acts of EC members - calling their decision for holding by-election as a strict violation against Supreme Court's ruling. He also encouraged the security entities to act on the duty of apprehending members of the EC, noting their clear refusal to heed top court's order is a criminal offense.

Election Commission has scheduled by-elections to the constituencies of Vilinigili, Thulusdhoo, Maduvvari, Dhihdhoo, south-Machhangolhi and Dhangethi. EC had concluded the lawmakers of the six constituencies had been disqualified.
