Dunya urges peace talks for a serene nation

State Minister of Health Ministry and daughter of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Dunya Maumoon has called out to hold peace talks amid rising tension and conflict in the political field in Maldives.

The government has thrown an olive branch to opposing political figures and entities to partake in peace talks for a conceivable truce, barring any specific conditions. The State Minister has urged everyone to bury the hatchet and find common grounds.

While extending her Eid greetings, she welcomed representatives of President Abdullah Yameen, Home Minister Azleen Ahmed and new Mission head to Sri Lanka Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) to visit the ailing Jumhooree Party leader at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Qasim Ibrahim. Qasim, who is the Villa chairman as well had received a jail term of 3 years 2 months and 12 days of being found guilty of graft funding.

Dunya Maumoon wished the Jumhooree Party leader a swift recovery.

She also showed grave concern for her brother, Dhiggaru constituency lawmaker Faris Maumoon who had been in and out of Criminal Court over the trial of allegedly bribing several parliamentarians to buy vote over the no confidence motion filed against parliament speaker Abdullah Maseeh.

Dunya defined the situation as agonizing, as she stressed how the recent political upheaval and opposition uprising had pit conflicts and unrest in her family.

Recently she visited her brother Faris Maumoon at Maafushi penitentiary along with father Maumoon Abdul Gayoom while she had also attended her brother's hearing at Criminal Court. This lead to rumors sparking about her apparent wavering fealty to the state, however she rebutted such claims affirming her loyalty lies with the incumbent president.

Recently during a speech she delivered, Dunya Maumoon addressed on the importance of dialogue to resolve conflicts rather than drawing results from clenched fists and punches.
