Forged evidence against MP Faris Maumoon, says ex-Prez

Former President of Maldives and Dhiggaru constituency lawmaker Faris Maumoon's father, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has alleged the evidences produced at his son's trial are forged.

According to Maumoon Abdul Gayoom the Dhiggaru constituency parliamentarian has been jailed for the alleged grafting of several lawmakers over the no-confidence motion filed against parliament speaker Abdullah Maseeh, without proper evidence or proof. He also noted Faris' arrest breached the law and regulation.

Gayoom strongly accused of botched documents and forged evidence presented by the plaintiff during Faris Maumoon's trial, adding the evidence presented at Criminal Court over the charges filed by Prosecutor General are evident on foul-play.

"Prosecutor General has pushed to inspect a mobile phone to declare Faris' charges as valid. However based on the forensic reports, it is revealed the pictures in question were taken and stored in the device days after the phone was confiscated by the police, so its clear the evidence has been forged" Gayoom stated.

Additionally Gayoom also panned the unlawful jailing of Faris Maumoon stating that while the lawmaker was tried for grafting several lawmakers at parliament, following the probe of his trial Faris has been incarcerated for accepting bribe - a contradicting charge.

The former president also stressed the gross misconduct against Faris Maumoon is a blatant attempt to intimidate the opposition and its lawmakers working for a reform agenda on regulations and constitution. Gayoom affirmed the opposition would not be deterred and would carry out their duties towards reform.

Gayoom also called out the government and attached authorities to cease and desist the unlawful conduct against his son Faris Maumoon as well as to grant freedom to the lawmaker.
