By-Election case enters Supreme Court

Opposition alliance has filed case against Elections Commission for the annulment of the commission's decision to hold by-election for six constituencies.

The case filed by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom along with opposition backing cites that Elections Commission has decided to hold by-election in stark violation to Supreme Court rulings regarding the anti-defection rule. Also it breached the verdict over cases lodged by the lawmakers whose seats were in question.

The complaint lodged at Supreme Court by the opposition has requested to overrule Elections Commission's decision to host by-election and declare it unconstitutional and to adhere to the top court's ruling.

Earlier Elections Commission had declared Saud Hussain of Vilingili constituency, Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim of Thulusdhoo constituency and lawmakers of Maduvvari and Dhihdhoo constituencies Mohamed Ameeth and Abdul Latheef Mohamed respectively to have been unseated from their parliament roles.

Additionally Dhangethi constituent lawmaker Ilham Ahmed and South-Machchangolhi constituent parliamentarian Abdullah Sinan were declared as disqualified MPs as well.
