A group of lawyers have attended the office of Attorney General on Sunday to show their concern regarding the legal body and framework of Maldives as they gifted an "enlarged" version of the Maldivian Constitution - in a taunting fashion.
The lawyers' mob had also presented a petition bearing signatures of 56 prominent lawyers to Attorney General.
Shortly after exiting the AG office reform-lawyers spokesperson Mahfooz Saeed affirmed their petition was accepted from AG's administration however they were unsuccessful in encountering AG Mohamed Anil.
Saeed also noted that the "enlarged" version of Maldivian Constitution gifted to AG was also received by the office administration.
Famous local lawyer Husnu Suood confirmed that none of the Articles or corresponding clauses of the actual Constitution would be missed out on their gifted version. He responded in comical fashion stating "we presented the Constitution after enlarging it, so he [AG Anil] can view it properly" adding that any other institution or authority which fails to adhere to Constitution would be gifted a similarly enlarged copy.
The petition filed by the lawyers voiced concerns over misconduct and violation of court regulations, unlawful remanding, trial in absentia, unjust charges against judges and unlawful disciplinary actions as well as job intimidation.
Lawyers had also voiced strong concern over irredeemable influences by the court and judges towards colleagues, breaching constitutional conduct by Supreme Court, stripping rights of incarcerated individuals among many other.
In addition to this the lawyers had also questioned over Judicial Service Commission's integrity and the responsibilities of both Attorney General and Prosecutor General.
