Gan constituency lawmaker Fayyaz Ismail states the Supreme Court judges bench should be a people elect one when the opposition led reform agenda sees completion.
Lawmaker Ismail's comment came amid Sunday's stint when a lawyer mob attended Attorney General's office with an "enlarged" version of the Maldivian Constitution. In addition to this, a petition signed by 54 advocates were presented to Attorney General's office, this was earlier presented to Supreme Court which however was not accepted by the authority.
The petition raised concerns about the integrity and credibility of the judicial system and its elite representatives while there were several pressing matters discussed and questioned as well; which includes intimidation over job, unlawful apprehension of politicians and lawmakers as well as adverse influence by judges and advocates on colleagues among several other concerns.
Sunday's stint has resulted in Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) to intervene by concluding to put a temporary suspension order on all the advocates who took part in the mob.
The petition filed by the lawyers voiced concerns over misconduct and violation of court regulations, unlawful remanding, trial in absentia, unjust charges against judges and unlawful disciplinary actions as well as job intimidation.
Lawyers had also voiced strong concern over irredeemable influences by the court and judges towards colleagues, breaching constitutional conduct by Supreme Court, stripping rights of incarcerated individuals among many other.
In addition to this the lawyers had also questioned over Judicial Service Commission's integrity and the responsibilities of both Attorney General and Prosecutor General.
DJA issued a statement on Sunday night confirming the suspension order on all 54 lawyers bearing name in the petition. According to the authority two probings are placed on the advocates.
This includes the unlawful of intervention on transparent conduct of legal work by judges executed through mob assembly at Supreme Court premises and signing and endorsing a document which violates the regulations and procedures of legislation.
