Political Party of Maldives (PPM) has issued a retaliating statement condemning the misuse of the party's name in a statement released by Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
MDP released their statement regarding the suspension order released on all 54 lawyers who signed the petition pushed into Supreme Court over several pressing matters.
The opposing political party had released the statement on their official website in English, which bore PPM's name attached to defecting members of the illicit faction. This was scrutinized heavily by the Vice President of PPM, Abdul Raheem Abdullah who criticized MDP's move, stressing the use of their party's name and its relevance should always be associated with the legal head - incumbent president Abdullah Yameen - or with members who had not defected from the actual faction.
Further emphasizing his point stating that others hold no right of using PPM's name in such a fashion.
Speaking during a press meeting at the party's office on Tuesday Vice President of the party, Abdullah noted the issue had been notified to MDP via a formal letter requesting to omit their name from the joint statement by Jumhoory Party and MDP.
He also added "if the name is not removed before the our requested date, we will take necessary action against them."
Secretary General of PPM, Dr. Abdullah Khaleel embalmed Abdullah's statement and added that the course of action would be discussed and evaluated within the party, where they will decide what actions will be taken and who will bear responsibility for it.
Abdul Raheem speculated the usage of PPM's name in the joint statement by MDP stating it was used due to the presence of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in the opposition alliance. However, he stressed that the former president does not hold any legal authority over the party's name anymore and Gayoom cannot use the title of "President Of Maldives" due to his tenure coming to end years back.
