Spokesperson of Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed 16 dangerous individuals will be tagged under the Moni-Com Act on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference held on Wednesday, Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan stated the Police strongly believes monitoring individuals who are identified dangerous but cannot be held in police custody without a trial underway. Details of 16 individuals were forwarded for tagging.

All 16 individuals will be tagged on Thursday and their movement will be monitored.

Ankle tags under the Moni-Com Act were first placed in criminals during Umar Naseer's tenure as the Home Minister. Under his command 15 individuals were tagged and placed under surveillance.

However following the untimely resignation of Naseer the procedure of tagging criminals fell into recess.

Those who are tagged by authorities, as per the rules set by High Court dictates they cannot be outside their residence between 22:00hrs til 06:00hrs the following day. In addition to this, individuals who are tagged can leave out of Male' or their home town after receiving permission from Home Minister citing it as such.

Furthermore suspects are ordered by the court to refrain visits to specified locations and venues while their bio-metric details and credit or debit card details are collected to monitor financial transactions and movements.
