UN concern over advocates' suspension

The United Nations has voiced their grave concern over the surprising suspend order on 54 advocates over a rally mob in front of the top court premises.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Mr. Diego Garcia-Sayan stated the conclusion from the top court over the suspend order on one-third of practicing lawyers in the capital breached international conduct and ethics. He also emphasized that advocates were not granted opportunity to properly defend themselves.

Garcia-Sayan highlighted over the biased and unjust nature of the verdict stating that the sentence was delivered barring lawyers and advocates from placing an appeal on the case. In addition to this, he validated the right to rallying and assembly for advocates and lawyers thus stripping such a right away from them is a concerning matter.

While several advocates were slammed with a suspension order following their stint of assembling a mob in front of Supreme Court premises, 29 lawyers had been once again permitted for practicing.

A petition bearing 35 signatures from distinct lawyers ordering for the revoke on suspension of the lawyers was filed at Supreme Court, while the case was presented to Civil Court as well.

Civil Court had however, dismissed the case.
