Nasheed opines possible interim president from 2018 elections

The self exiled former president of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has said that he believes an interim president will be elected from the upcoming 2018 presidential elections.

In an audio message, the former president of Maldives said that as his party Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) and its members get ready for the dawning presidential elections on 2018 he is uncertain about a transparent and just election conduct.

His statements were aimed at his party's most powerful wing; the national assembly of MDP.

The former president, Nasheed who currently resides in Sri Lanka said that it is indefinite to speculate whether the elections of 2018 will be transparent or otherwise.

"One can only speculate about the possibilities," Nasheed said, referring to his opinion about the presidential election's possible outcome.

Nasheed went on to add that based on his knowledge and relatively short-spanned experience as a leader, he believes the head of the state elected through the upcoming elections would be an interim president.

"The interim president's responsibility would be to resolve all the prime elements needing swift amendment during the intermediary period. This includes resolve to the judiciary and state government," Nasheed explained.

He also added that it is the interim president's responsibility to arrange for a transparent election to elect a definite president, while he placed his doubt about a scientific result from a party-based election.

"By scientific result, I mean that we all know that elections are won or declared a win through numbers or figures. Today it is uncertain for us, for MDP or Jumhoory Party and even president Maumoon and Adaalath party to win with the current situation," Nasheed explained his opinion.

Former president Nasheed said that he believes the election of an interim president is the best approach of bringing resolve and opening opportunities for a possible election to derive a conclusive presidential candidate; that includes members of MDP who are vying for presidency.

Nasheed pointed out when he was sworn into office back in 2008 Maldivian state had an income of MVR 7 billion, which through various reform policies and initiatives have been placed at MVR 25 billion for a year.

Furthermore the former president had said the voters' list should be amassed through the opposition for the 2018 presidential elections.

Nasheed hoped his opinion and ideology on electing an interim president would be considered and deliberated by the national assembly of MDP, and he added that if any of the members have conflicts or complaints, they can take it up with him.
