Opposition boycotts supplementary budget discussion

Opposition lawmakers have boycotted the Wednesday parliament session of 2017 supplementary budget deliberation.

Anti-government parliamentarians had continuously protested inside the parliament chambers since the last sessions of second term. They had continued the same since the commencement of third term of parliament as well.

Unlike the recent parliament sessions, angry tirades and loud screams were unheard inside the chambers that allowed the existing members inside to continue discussion on the presented bill with ease.

So far none of the anti-government lawmakers have been available for a comment regarding the sudden absence of them in Wednesday's sitting.

Parliamentary group leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Vilimale' constituency member of parliament Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik had criticized the opposition stating the members who are remunerated under parliament administration have been absent from fulfilling their duty responsibly.

"They don't have to shout and scream inside the chambers and in front of Speaker. We are still witnessing Abdulla Maseeh fulfilling responsibility as parliament Speaker and we thank him for that," Nihan said.
