Disclosure over Prez account money deposit urged

An Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) probe has revealed a private company depositing a total of USD 1 million to the personal account of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom at his Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) account.

Members of the opposition has urged relevant authorities to probe the case further and called out to reveal the nature and details of the transaction.

ACC has revealed their inspection showed a total of USD 500,000 was deposited to President Abdulla Yameen's personal account at MIB on October 13, 2015 and another deposit of the same amount was made two days later on October 15, 2015.

Kin'bidhoo constituency lawmaker Abdulla Riyaz had urged strongly from the head of state to disclose full nature of the monetary transaction and its details of usage.

Meanwhile North-Galolhu constituency lawmaker Eva Abdulla brought up similar sense of queries adding details of whether the money had been transferred back or not should be disclosed as well.

Although the ACC report had not borne the name of the private corporation, it had specified the company had acted as the middle-men or broker channel in Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation's (MMPRC) land and island leasing contracts and deals.

This corporation had already been identified as SOF while its CEO lives abroad in self imposed exile.

The commission had thus decided to file the case since SOF's major shareholders have gone into hiding or have exiled themselves abroad for sanctuary, citing the case could progress any further after collecting testimonies from them.

However Addu-Meedhoo parliamentarian Rozaina Adam stressed that while members of SOF corporation have fled abroad, President Yameen can still be probed and ACC's work would find completion once it investigates how the money was used.

Several accusations were made at President Abdulla Yameen over the money transfer to his MIB account. Most of these accusations were initially shrugged off over lack of strong evidence.

In the meantime, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb is currently doing time for the alleged assassination attempt on President Yameen as well as for the MMPRC corruption scandal.
