Officer alleged of plotting President's assassination

A Maldives Police Service officer has been alleged and tried for the apparent involvement in a plot to assassinate President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The Sub-Inspector rank officer is being tried for terrorism following social media status that read of threatening to assassinate the President of Maldives. Although the officer has been alleged and tried for the offense, the trial has not commenced.

Back in 2015, then Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and two officers of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) were found guilty of plotting and executing a bombing attack on 'Finifen Maa' speed boat which President Yameen uses for traveling.

Though President Yameen was unscathed in the attack, First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim sustained some injuries.

Moreover, ex-Vice President and several others have been found guilty and prosecuted for hiring a contract killer from Sri Lanka. The case had been ongoing.

Recently Defense Minister Adam Shareef had confirmed a total of three assassination attempts were made on President Abdulla Yameen.
