Reform works with aid of parliament majority; says Maumoon

Former president of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has assured of reform works through parliament with lawmaker majority advantage for the opposition.

Speaking at the opposition rally at Maafannu Kunoozu - the prime opposition camp - Gayoom affirmed the opposition's initiative of bringing reform will be carried through legitimate means and parliament majority is their advantage.

He also highlighted that if Supreme Court had not ruled any lawmaker of parliament disqualified then it cannot be sustained by the others. He also pointed out the opposition currently holds 45 lawmakers in parliament granting them the majority inside the chambers.

Gayoom also stressed the state intervened the parliament process with the aid of security forces including police and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) in order to barricade the opposition's growing influence at the parliament. He also emphasized the government's motive is to hinder the opposition's conduct and place an authoritarian practice.

In his speech, the former president had shed light into the importance of prior reform work before the presidential elections of 2018 and assured the opposition majority at parliament will be fully utilized in order to gain the needed amendments to constitution and law.
