Parliament Speaker disqualification case to top court

A constitutional case has been filed by Dhiggaru constituency lawmaker Ahmed Faris Maumoon against parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, to validate the latter's disqualification from parliament seat.

The no-confidence motion against Maseeh was filed with 45 signatures of the parliament. However, though the motion was set with parliament majority, it was dismissed from the floors and Faris Maumoon was later on tried at court for bribing lawmakers to sign on the no-confidence motion.

Faris presented the case to Supreme Court while filing for the issue of excluding him in parliament and committee meetings.

In the case presented by Dhiggaru lawmaker, parliament sessions and committee meetings progressing with his exclusion is unconstitutional and parliament Speaker has failed in his responsibility for a transparent and just conduct at the parliament chambers. He cited to remove the Speaker from his designation for gross misconduct.

Faris had also stressed that under constitutional law, he is a lawfully elected parliamentarian to represent the people of Dhiggaru constituency but since July 18 of the current year, he has been disbarred from every parliament and committee meetings. He had also pointed his constitutional rights have been stripped by government authorities and parliament.

He had also accused the incumbent state and parliament for barricading the Dhiggaru constituency citizens' rights and for the unconstitutional conduct against Faris.
