High Court supports order on Former Defense Minister

High Court on Tuesday had supported the Criminal Court order on former Defense Minister Tholhath Ibrahim sentencing him to jail term of 10 years.

The former Defense Minister was sentenced to jail for 10 years back in April 10, 2015. He was found guilty of misusing local army personnel to abduct the then Criminal Court chief judge Abdulla Mohamed, and detaining him against his will at Girifushi, of Male' atoll.

Ibrahim's appeal presented to High Court was assessed and the court had in return supported Criminal Court's decision stating he was found guilty of the misconduct and therefore the 10 year jail term is justifiable.

Earlier, former president of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed was tried at Criminal Court and was found guilty of the offense. He was charged with terrorism and received a sentence of 13 years in jail. However, he had self exiled himself from Maldives and found sanctuary under UK when he flew for medical attention.
