Speaker claims budget approval constitutional

Parliament Speaker had rebuffed the opposition claims of Wednesday's parliament session of approving the 2018 state budget.

Abdulla Maseeh, the Speaker of parliament who according to the opposition has been disqualified of his post, said that the voting for upcoming year's budget did not violate the constitutional law or conduct.

Finance Ministry assessed and compiled state budget for 2018, with a total of MVR 27.9 billion was approved through the parliament with 39 votes.

It was obvious the opposition had refrained from casting vote for the budget approval and had deemed it to be insufficient. The anti-government movement has decided to 'boycott' the budget for next year.

Post approval of the state budget, parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh addressed the lawmakers present inside the chambers claiming the upcoming year's budget approval has been constitutional.

Opposition had maintained their disapproval of the voting conduct stating that public interest matter related bills should be passed with a quorum of half of the parliamentarians present for a session according to the Maldivian Constitution's Article number 87.

The Wednesday session had also violated the parliament regulation's article 38 which cites the same as Constitution's Article 87.

Former parliament Speaker Abdulla Shahid had also pointed that Wednesday's parliament session had proceeded without required quorum to pass the state budget of 2018, calling the voting invalid and urging for to vote again before January.
