Conditioned release of additional inmates

President Abdulla Yameen has decided to grant second opportunities to inmates who fit the criterion under criminal pardoning and sentence relief act.

President's Office on Thursday confirmed that post interviews and evaluation conducted on inmates and their families in order to comprise the list of prisoners who will be subjected to pardoning. This includes specific conditions prior to release.

Inmates are subjected to three conditions which include 1 month house arrest in first stage and a 2 month house arrest in second stage, while third stage involves proper monitoring by Maldives Correctional Service.

Second opportunities for offenders are granted after assessing three key factors, which includes; nature of crime and depth of involvement, current status of the offender and offender's penitentiary conduct.

Inmates are required to sign an agreement with the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) prior to release, which if violated would be reversed. Conditions under this agreement include;

- refraining from derogatory comments on government and its institutes on social platforms as well as abstaining from reciprocating on political issues.
- refrain from spreading hoax news and information on public platforms
- participating in media related events without consent of Maldives Correctional Service
- participating in unconstitutional rallies and camps

Prisoners need to comply to several other conditions which includes seeking employment and prompt updates of employment details to MCS as well as sustaining decent behavior and conduct in society.
