Prof. Ugail directs strong criticism at govt once again

A local professor at UK's Bradford University has criticized the Maldivian government's policy questioning about the plausibility of ballooning country debt for the sake of urban development.

Professor Hassan Ugail who in recent times have been more vocal with his opinions has stressed that Maldives is slowly falling into heavy debt. He also made strong implications that Maldives may stand to compromise its sovereignty which Ugail was indirectly referring China's growing influence.

Stating the dangers it would pose for foreign nations to 'own' lands in a country, Ugail said in his tweet "letting a foreign power pinch even an inch of land poses a grave threat to the very sovereignty of a nation."

The only citizen of Maldives to hold professorship, Ugail recently fell into scrutiny when it was widely reported that Maldives Ministry of Education had circulated an order disbarring him of giving any lectures in any of local institutes.

However this was officially denied by the ministry.
