A total of 566 individuals have received government initiated student loan to pursue higher studies.
In a special ceremony held at Iskandharu School on Tuesday night, the successful candidates received their students loans from Education Minister Dr. Aishath Shiham.
The student loan scheme was opened for public on August aiming to grant scholarships to a total of 1,000 individuals. However only 612 students had applied by due and 566 out of them were eligible. The loan scheme covers studies from diploma level to masters both in Maldives and abroad.
While speaking at the ceremony Dr. Shiham had noted that 5,200 students had received student loans for higher education since the government took over in 2013.
Recently president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had announced scholarship opportunities for a total of 2,050 students which as per Dr. Shiham would be open for application in the upcoming month.
In her speech, Dr. Shiham focused on the importance of providing academic, technical and skills training to develop adequate human assets for corporations and to cater the inception of new career fields and opportunities.
The Education Minister had also emphasized on improving academic institutes to better facilitate students and provide advanced education.
