Two of the former president of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed has expressed their concern while condemning the move of US to acknowledge Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
Ex-president Gayoom shared his view on Twitter as he said that the USA's move to accept Jerusalem as Israel's capital was "clearly an act of support to injustice and aggression."
Nasheed had also expressed his concern as he said that with Jerusalem getting USA's stamp of approval as Israeli capital would catalyze unrest in the already turmoil ridden West Bank. He also added that the situation is critical enough for extremists on both ends to exploit the full capacity of it for their gains and incite violent uproars.
Meanwhile the Chancellor of Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) and former Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem urged the Maldivian citizen to raise their voice against the US decision of acknowledging Jerusalem as part of Israel.
Jerusalem is the third most sacred land for the Muslim brethren with Masjid-ul Aqsa which was the second mosque that was built situated there.
The US decision of identifying Jerusalem and their move to establish an embassy in the city has been widely criticized by several of the Arab league countries while France, a member of the European Union had also condemned US of their move.
The solidity of the decision was affirmed when US newspapers and agencies had confirmed their president Donald Trump had informed his Palestinian counterpart Mahmud Abbas of the decision and establishment of a US embassy in Jerusalem.
Although it is still uncertain whether US would in fact act upon their decision at the final hours, it is understood the incumbent American President had promised of accepting Jerusalem as an Israeli state in his campaign manifesto.
This is a direct revert from the long standing American policy on the West Bank issue which had earlier argued the situation must be resolved between Israel and Palestine without US intervention.
Trump won the presidential election with strong support from Jews at homeland while his son in law Jared Kushner is also a Jew so it comes as no surprise on US backing the Jewish state of Israel.
