Expat kidnapping case comes to light

The case of an expatriate worker being kidnapped has come to the attention of authorities. The foreign worker was abducted by a group of other expatriates.

A source who had extensive details of the issue spoke with Avas Online to confirm that the expatriate had been abducted last week Monday over a conflict that had sparked when the individual had seemingly failed to meet demands of the people from whom a sizeable amount of loan was taken.

The expat worker had taken loan amounts from several other expatriates on the condition of settling the amount post a land-plot transaction deal in his homeland.

At the time of the kidnapping, the foreigner was attempting to fly to his homeland; Bangladesh in order to sell the land under his name to recover money for his loan. Meanwhile the kidnapped individual's son had also been attempting to settle the loan amount to the lenders.

However before he could fly back to complete the land trade, he was forcefully detained around 11:00hrs on Monday at the residence where he was staying. The abductees had demanded from the kidnapped worker to transfer ownership of his land to them without monetary transaction involved.

This became clear when the kidnappers had phoned the abducted individual's son to make demands. The son had then acquired assistance from a local colleague of his to contact Maldives Police and had informed of the situation.

The local who was helping his expat colleague had notified the authority with full details including the credentials of the kidnapper group's leader - his name, passport and place of work and address of stay in Maldives.

Police had discovered the address by cross checking the registered address of the kidnapper's phone number after which they had contacted another recipient registered under the same address. Upon contact, police received information that a group of expatriates had been holding a 'silent' foreigner hostage at the residence.

However the kidnapper group had relocated themselves along with their hostage to another location before Police arrived at the residence for checking.

Recent developments in the case confirms that a total of eight foreigners are involving in the kidnapping.

Maldives Police had been successful in triangulating the location with the help of cellphone signal from the kidnapper's device. They were arrested sometime on Tuesday and the leader of the kidnapper gang had been brought under police custody as well.

Meanwhile the abducted foreigner is currently safe and is under the supervision of the local who had helped the expat's son in the case. They are currently attempting to arrange travel for the expatriate.

It is also reported that the leader of the kidnapper group had held a long tenure in Maldives and he spoke in clear Dhivehi language while making demands to the local over phone.

Police Media official had confirmed the case was first reported to the authority on Monday and the kidnapper was arrested sometime on Tuesday, adding that the case is being further investigated.
