MDP vows to protect local governance

Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) claimed that as the pioneers behind introducing a local governance system in Maldives, they will protect it.

During an opposition rally held on Monday night in presence of several opposition parties, Deputy to MDP's Chairperson Ali Niyaz had criticized the incumbent administration of neglecting the Maldivian constitution citing a local governance system of administering the state.

"We remember the system because we are the ones who had initiated it. MDP and the opposition are the only ones who consider the local governance system, and we will do everything in our power to protect and preserve it," Niyaz said.

Niyaz had emphasized on the importance of upholding a local governance system as it is made mandatory through the Constitution with a separate legislation implemented detailing it. He had also said that the party believes in keeping the prime power vested in the people however the regulations made then had loopholes and room for improvement.

Furthermore Niyaz had accused the incumbent administration of sacking and disposing council members and councilors due to their pledge or sympathizing the opposition parties.
