Unity is key to uprooting the political crisis; says ex-Prez

Former President of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has urged for the unity of Maldivian citizens in order to avert the current turmoil of political upheavals.

The former head of the state directed his message towards the Maldivian virtue of unity at times of desperation and urgency. He recalled the devastating tsunami that hit Maldivian shores 13 years ago claiming several lives and ruining thousands of homes and livelihood, emphasizing on the strength, courage and unity shown by the people of the country.

His message taking down the memory lane was to draw similarities of a nation in crisis and the key to averting such situations is by banding the citizens together, working towards a common goal and cause.

Gayoom urged the citizens to draw the same courage and unity they showcased 13 years ago during the tsunami crisis in order to uproot the political misconduct referring to the apparent oppression by incumbent administration.

"We are witnessing trying times in Maldives, dark days filled with several citizens getting unlawfully convicted and tried. So in the same manner Maldivians showed bravery and unity to get through the devastation led by the tsunami crisis, we must unite to disentangle the current political injustice," Gayoom said in his message.

Former president's message was played during Tuesday night's panel discussion session at Maafannu Kunoozu - Jumhoory Party's official camp as well as the prime camp for opposition movements. In his message, Gayoom assured the continued efforts by the joint party alliance towards a transparent democratic conduct.

While former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has urged his countrymen to unite against the injustice and political oppression, other leaders of the united opposition alliance had echoed the same sentiments as him.

Their strong messages on Tuesday night's opposition initiated panel discussion is believed to be an act of reciprocation against ruling party claims of disinterest and rifts within the joint-party opposition.
