Political leader suggests alternative to discarding towed bikes

Parliamentary group leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has suggested a beneficial alternative to the complete discarding of towed motorbikes.

Police had towed more than 500 motorbikes within the year and was recently transported to Thilafushi - the prime waste disposal site in greater Male' region - to be completely broken down for scraps.

Suggesting a profitable approach in dealing with the impounded vehicles, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik - the PG leader of PPM - said "bikes with total worth millions are parked across roads and streets of Male', and each of these bikes would be valued around MVR 50,000 individually."

"Instead of wrecking these motorbikes down to scraps, these vehicles can be refurbished and overhauled in order to export to other countries," Nihan said.

Nihan explained that 500 motorbikes would value up to MVR 25 million and suggested African market of second-hand motorbike acquisition. He also suggested neighboring Lanka as a possible export destination.

While the roads have run out of proper parking spots in Male' more and more bikes are imported by various competitive businesses throughout the year.

Police had previously disassembled several towed motor vehicles that were either towed to impound or damaged vehicles left unattended on roads, this time around police had impounded vehicles violating parking regulations.
