Former President's resolution for new year is to 'free parliament'

Former President of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom confirmed his top priority as a new year aim would be to release the parliament from any influences and oppression.

In an official statement he released to greet the country with new year wishes, Gayoom said that Maldives is currently treading through a highly sensitive field with one end filled with injustice, corruption and 'darkness' while the other end holds everything in contrast to that.

Gayoom highlighted that 2017 had been a set of horrible events; one after the other for Maldivians while the vices in the society such as corruption, thievery and acts of gross misconduct had increased considerably.

"Constitution and constitutional rights to citizens have been stripped off from them, parliament came under 'siege' of authorities while several of the parliamentarians were dragged out of the parliament and off their respective seats, they were introduced to corrupt and brutal trials and legislation. Citizens were forced to witness the transition of a functioning democratic system to an tyranny, violating the practices of Islamic faith as well," read Gayoom's statement.

Gayoom had furthermore noted that Maldives had fallen behind in upholding a democratic system over the past few years, while he added that several locals had been mistreated and victimized by a tyrannical regime that favors individuals who support or sympathize with the government.

He called out to stand against and raise voice on the misdeeds and government's constant undermining of its people. Gayoom also urged the importance of enacting a state that understands and romanticizes the common people's beliefs and include everyone's ideologies.

"Our main focus for the new year of 2018 would be to free the parliament from the latches of corrupt entities and release it from the grips of a selected few in power. We aim to assure security for parliamentarians over their respective seats. Similarly our aim is to free the wrongfully incarcerated political leaders, who had been victims of a hate-mongering regime, jailed through biased and botched trials, we aim provide those political leaders the freedom to partake in their political conducts," Gayoom said.

Moreover the former head of state assured his countrymen of a possible revolt to change the current regime's unlawful practice and constant harassment and intimidation faced by opposition leaders and members. Gayoom had assured the opposition will place maximum effort to make the parliament an independent institute while they will work to transition a transparent democratic system in Maldives once again.
