A group of Indian fishermen are reported to be traveling to Maldivian waters to find their missing companions who have been missing since the cyclone Ockhi hit the region.
The Hindu reports that a band of 36 fishermen have taken it up themselves to find their 'brothers' who were reported to have stranded off course during the cyclone worsened. The fishermen decided to continue the search of fishermen, mostly from South Indian regions, due to their lack of faith in their government's initiatives.
The fishermen group started their journey in December 29 and is reported to be traveling to Maldives in hopes of finding their men.
Before embarking on their journey to find the missing fishermen, the 'search party' had acquired permission from the Indian Embassy at Maldives.
"We expect these fishermen to reach Maldives around January 2nd or 3rd and will be traveling through the country in their attempt to locate the missing fishermen. We do not have the details of the individuals included in the search party, and we are hoping they will conclude their search by January 5," Sunil Wala Villai, head of the search and rescue operation said.
Recently bodies of three victims who went missing during Ockhi struck. With the recently discovered bodies, the death toll of fishermen had risen to 10.
