Parliamentary group leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik has urged the local authorities to continue the probe into the rape case at a records studio on January 3.
Nihan emphasized to the authorities of the importance of apprehending the culprit regardless of their identities and apparent high-profile social ties.
The 19 year old rape victim who was molested inside the records studio on Wednesday, suspects her culprit to be a relative of a high ranking political member. Though the young artist who was victimized revealed the identity of her culprit, the details of the perpetrator has been kept discreet under the Anti-Defamation Act.
While former Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz had urged from the local police to hasten the arrest of the culprit, Nihan too had shared a similar sentiment while adding his own statement to bolster the his firm stand against sexual abuse.
Nihan urged the authorities to continue in their investigation without getting obstructed by anyone over claims of high-political connection and that rape culprits should be arrested regardless of their social status; he publicized his statement on Twitter.
Police had refrained from enclosing any details associated with the case while they had also refused to disclose if any suspects were apprehended for questioning.
Meanwhile it has been reported that the culprit of the rape case has changed his phone carrier number and has gone into hiding.
Maldives registers a surprisingly high number of sexual molestation and abuse cases with a staggering 417 cases reported to authorities in 2017. It has been only six days since 2018 had started but 3 cases of sexual abuse had already been lodged at the authorities.
