Maldives requests Japan support for UN Security Council membership

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has requested from Japanese foreign minister Taro Kono for the Asian giant's backing for Maldives to enroll as a non-permanent member of the United Nation's Security Council.

The Japanese foreign minister met with president Yameen on Saturday night to discuss about deepening ties between the two nations as well as to work together in resolving regional and international issues.

During their meeting, president Abdulla Yameen had requested from Kono for Japan's support in Maldives seeking a non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the years 2019 and 2020.

President Abdulla Yameen had focused on investment opportunities and fields Japanese entrepreneurs may be interested or gain benefit from while he also stressed on Japan's support in boosting the local tourism.

Japan is considered as the third largest tourist market in the Asian region.

The discussion also included the exchange of resource and information in order to counter climatic effects. President Yameen assured the increased effort by Maldives to utilize renewable energy resources to produce power and added that Maldives will comply with Japan to work together in bringing renewable energy production methods.

Japanese foreign minister assured president Yameen to provide with latest and innovative technology for climate control and monitoring.

Maldives is also part of Japan's Official Development Assistance, under which the country receives aid in socio-economic development according to president Yameen. Additionally the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) helps to host vocational and technical training programs, student exchange programs as well as training programs to counter natural disasters under ISBT are part of Japan's assistance provided to Maldives; which were appreciated by the head of state during Saturday night's meeting.

Foreign minister Taro Kono had appreciated and thanked the Maldivian president and his administration for the support provided in Japan's initiative to tackle challenges in marine and land security while he also focused on strengthening the safety parameters for the 2020 Olympic Games, which will be hosted at Tokyo.

Kono stressed on the importance of working together against acts of terrorism and countering such activities in the Asian region.
