Ex-CP Riyaz up for another trial

Former Commissioner of Police and Kin'bidhoo constituency lawmaker Abdulla Riyaz is set to appear for a third trial. He is being tried for the misuse of position and power to influence and obstruct lawful conduct.

Criminal Court, on Wednesday handed over the trial related documents to Riyaz which was followed under the new Criminal Procedure Act implemented on July 2017. The final implementation of the Act states that a defendant of a case must be handed the case related documents from trying court within five days of case commencement.

However, the former CP was tried for the offense on November 28, 2017. Initial hearings of the case has been tabled under the same Criminal Procedure Act, which must be followed prior to trial hearing.

Riyaz is tried for the illicit communication with a government elected official, which according to the article number 511 of the Maldives Penal Code is an act of crime.

Convicts pleading guilty for such a crime is reserved a sentence of nine months and 18 days in prison.

Previously Riyaz was tried for obstructing the duty of an officer when he refused to disclose the PIN details of his smartphone which was confiscated with regards to a then ongoing investigation.

The Kin'bidhoo MP is among the dozen parliament lawmakers who are tried at the court for the offense of obstructing an officer on duty.

This case is attached to the scuffle at the parliament house on July 24, 2017 when a group of opposition lawmakers attempted to breach into the premises and chambers, who then instigated a riot upon being barricaded from accessing the indoors.
